What is Linen Made of?

Linen has been valued for its comfort, breathability, and simply elegant texture for ages but have you ever asked yourself what it's actually made of? At Linenwear, we think your clothes shouldn't just feel great but also be from a place of authenticity and the outdoors. Let us take you behind the seams to reveal the amazing process of how linen is made from humble plant to fashionable garment.

2. From Flax to Fiber The Process

3. 100% Natural and Biodegradable

4. Characteristics of Flax-Based Linen

5. Why It Matters to Know the Origin

1. The Origin The Flax Plant

Linen is derived from the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum), a flowering crop that has been used for thousands of years. The fibrous, durable stalks of the plant are what render linen textile feasible. Flax is well adapted to cooler climates and needs much less water and chemicals than many other fiber crops, making linen a very sustainable fabric.

2. From Flax to Fiber The Process

The process from flax plant to linen fabric is a multi-step process with great care taken to maintain the fibers' strength and natural integrity:

Harvesting:

Flax is typically extracted from the root (not cut off) to maintain the fiber length and enhance the longevity of the ultimate fabric.

Retting:

The stalks harvested are wetted in water or subjected to dew in the fields. This softens and loosens the fibers by degrading the pectin that holds them together.

Breaking and Scutching:

The retted stalks are dried and put through rollers to break them up. The woody core is stripped off and leaves behind the long flax fibers.

Hackling:

This process entails intermingling the flax fibers to make them smooth, parallel, and prepared for spinning.

Spinning and Weaving:

The pure fibers are spun into yarn and later woven into linen cloth. This is when linen develops its characteristic texture and durability.

3. 100% Natural and Biodegradable

One of the best parts about linen is that it’s entirely natural. Since it comes straight from a plant, linen is biodegradable, compostable, and free of synthetic chemicals (especially if untreated or organically dyed).

At Linenwear, we use 100% pure flax linen, ensuring that every piece you wear is gentle on your skin and gentle on the planet.

4. Characteristics of Flax-Based Linen

Because linen is made from flax, it carries several unique characteristics:

  • Breathable and moisture-wicking
  • Durable and withstand wear and tear
  • Nature-textured for a casual, organic appearance
  • Hypoallergenic and gentle on sensitive skin
  • Cruelty-free from root to thread

5. Why It Matters to Know the Origin

Understanding what your clothing is made of makes you a smarter, more sustainable fashion consumer. When you wear linen, you're wearing a fabric that:

  • Originates from the earth
